Day 3 is always the hardest

I mentioned yesterday that I'm trying to do this low carb thing. I know full well I'm going through detox, and day 3 is ALWAYS the hardest with these things. I can remember my mom trying to quit smoking. Days 1 and 2 were a breeze, day 3 put her over the edge. That's where I am today.

My daughter had some animal crackers for her snack. I had almonds.
The kids both wanted pizza for lunch. I had an egg with a piece of cheese.

It doesn't matter that I'm full. I want carbs! I want to stuff my face with animal crackers and follow that up with a piece of chocolate. Gee, can we see why I was having a hard time maintaining my weight?

I'm not really doing a strict 'paleo' or 'atkins' thing. I'm just limiting the junk, which for me tends to be useless carbs.

I went to the store today and bought a cart FULL of fresh fruit. Watermelon, canteloupe, grapes, pears, cherries...

I figure when I'm craving sweets, I'll have a sweet piece of fruit. Can't hurt, right? I'm certainly getting carbs in my diet, just not the bad kind.

While out shopping I bought myself SIX new bras. That's right, I found some that actually fit AND were on sale, so I stocked up. I'm so tired of the big gap in the cups of my bras where my boobs used to be. I used to be a 38B (very hard to find) and now I'm a 34A. Yeah, they look like training bras, but they fit so I don't care!

I have a family reunion coming up in 6 weeks. There's also a ladies lunch the day before the reunion. Most of these people haven't seen me in about 2 years and have no idea about my weight loss, except from pictures on facebook. It's important to me that I look good for these occasions.
I've been working out like mad and really want to show off my hard work. So...I bought this today.

I know it needs to be ironed!

I'm REALLY not sure about horizontal stripes. This is a whole new territory for me.
Please be honest and let me know if this works for the ladies luncheon (with my aunts and cousins).
I still have the receipt and can return if need be.

Ten Things Thursday

It's Thursday, my favorite blogging day.
You know the deal...

1. We let the kiddos stay up past their bed time last night to watch America's Got Talent. It's our favorite show. You'd think they would sleep in today, right? Nope, kiddo #2 woke up at 3am. and pretty much never went back to sleep after that. It's going to be a FUN day!

2. I love to mix things into my yogurt for texture. This morning I was eating a yogurt with a handful of raw almonds mixed in. I think one of the almonds might have slipped down without being chewed, and now I'm paranoid. I can't finish the rest of the yogurt because I'm afraid that the almond might just be sitting there at the top of my pouch, getting ready to lurch! So far, no pain. Fingers crossed.

3. The first 2 blogs I read this morning were from people having their bands removed. So sad, and only adds to my paranoia!

4. I'm getting ready to go do my second Fit Test on the insanity program. Can't wait to see if I've improved much since the first time (3 weeks ago).

5. I tried to go on full liquids for a couple days in an effort to get off the last 2 pounds I gained when the in laws were in town. I couldn't do it. I need to chew!
I've decided that carbs and sugar are my real problem and I need to detox from those things. Yesterday I switched from liquids to pure protein. NO crackers or pretzels (or the endless list of other useless carby things I have in my pantry) for me. This morning I was already down a pound. I think this is something I can stick with more faithfully than liquids, and it probably makes more sense.

6. WHEN will I stop feeling fat? I don't know how to stop hating my body. My thighs are too jiggly, my arms are flabby, my belly too big...the list could go on and on. I'm really only about 10 pounds overweight. My lowest weight EVER, and somehow it's never good enough. I really want to enjoy this accomplishment, but my brain is still fat. I think my brain needs a lap band.

7. Gonna' be almost 100 degrees here today. We're going to the pool. Hoping that goes well with the sleep deprived kiddo! Lord help me.

8. Did you read about the new weight loss drug that's being approved. The research shows that 33% of people who take this drug will lose 5% of their excess body weight over a one year time frame. Really? That would be about 5 pounds in one year for someone like me who was 80 pounds over weight! Would you take a pill to lose FIVE pounds over a YEAR? Not to mention the potential risk of serious side effects like heart valve disease, and tumors! Come on, I think we can do better than that. And keep in mind that only 33% of people in the study actually lost the weight. That means that about 66% didn't lose anything. Nice.

9. OK, I just took a break from blogging to do to that darn Fitness test so I could tell you how I did. I stayed about the same in almost every category except the last two. For some reason, I tore it up at the end! Improved my score greatly for the last two. I have to test again in 3 weeks.

10. My daughter is watching a cooking show. They're making a huge chocolate cake. I want cake. Please refer to #5.

WTF Wednesday!

Thanks to our dear friend Draz, it's WTF Wednesday. I sure as heck have nothing weight loss related to write about, so here goes!

WhyTF is it that my kids NEVER need me for anything until I am on the phone or in the bathroom. Seriously. Every. Single. Time.  It's like their 'mommy has to pee' radar goes off and everything becomes an emergency!

WhyTF do the deer eat ALL my daisies in the garden, but none of the weeds. I'd think a good leafy green would be good for them once in a while, right? East some damn weeds, please!

WhyTF is it that it's on the cool side all week, and the one day that my 5 year old has soccer, it's expected to be in the upper 90's?! Really. It couldn't be 90 degrees yesterday, or tomorrow, just the ONE day she has soccer. I feel for the poor kid because I know I sit there in my lawn chair, not moving, sweating like a hooker in church. She has to run up and down the field for Pete's sake!

My kids are terrified of all things in nature. A bee buzzing, a frog in the garden, a chipmunk dashing by. This has to stop at some point because we live in the COUNTRY now people! We cannot stay in the house all year long so they don't have to see bugs. WTF!

WhoTF thought it would be appropriate and acceptable to charge $36 for an outfit for an 18" doll? My 5 year old has picked out at least 3 outfits that she wants for her AG doll (which she doesn't even have yet). I've told her she better get a job because I don't even spend that much on an outfit for HER, and she's a real person. There's obviously a market for these things or they wouldn't still be in business, right? What's wrong with people?!

WhyTF do I have to be so darn hungry on the days I do some seriously awesome exercise?! I know I'm burning more calories, but I'd like to create a deficit so I can actually LOSE some weight here. It's 10am. and I've already eaten 3 times. WTF!

OMG, It's Thursday!

I almost missed "Ten things Thursday", my most favorite blogging day of the week!

1. I'm 4 pounds above my comfort zone and mama ain't happy! I know earlier in the week it was because there was lots of cookies and going out for ice cream with the grandfolks and kids. However, I went back on the straight and narrow yesterday and fully expected ALL 4 pounds to be gone this morning. Yes, I live in dream land. It's not gone and my dumb scale made sure to tell me that this morning. More straight and narrow for me until it's gone!

2. Still doing "Insanity" with the hubby every freaking morning before the sun even thinks about rising. Every day I bitch and moan about how much I hate it, but I keep doing it. Every day a different part of my body is sore, so it must be doing something. 

3. Hubby couldn't do Insanity with me today because he was going golfing and guess what? I did it WITHOUT him! Get outta' town...seriously! The scale made me do it.

4. We were supposed to be going out on a date tomorrow night at some fancy 'froo froo' drink place where they make fantastic alcoholic ice cream drinks. I've changed those plans and decided we'll just go out for a simple dinner instead. The scale made me do it. Effing scale!

5. My MIL has weeded and pruned every square inch of our 2 acre yard. She's only been here 5 days. 

6. Yesterday we got a delivery from Fed Ex. It was a new pruner for the trees that need to be cut back around our house. Before I even signed for the pruner, the MIL had her shoes on and was ready to go out and cut back trees! I had to slap her down and tell her to take a break. It was 96 degrees out! Crazy lady.

7. My 5 year old is OBSESSED with American Girl doll stuff. She watches You Tube videos of little girls opening their new dolls EVERY DAY. It's crazy. I should mention that she does not have an AG doll, nor will she be getting one any time soon (maybe Christmas). But that doesn't stop her from watching video after video. Should I be concerned?

8. I made the frozen banana 'ice cream' dessert for the in laws and they nearly went into convulsions. I was told to stock up on bananas so we can do that several more times while they're here. We made it again last night with a handful of frozen mixed berries. It was like raspberry sorbet, I kid you not! SO refreshing and tasty.

9. Since we live in Wisconsin now, it's only appropriate that we're going on a cheese factory tour tomorrow. We're going to see how real Wisconsin cheese is made (and of course sample some!). Should be cool. I'm gonna' be a cheese head.

10. I had my 22 month bandiversary the other day and totally forgot about it. I usually take pictures, and that didn't happen this month. I promise when hubby and I get dressed for our dinner date, I'll have him take a pic of me so I can post the before and now shots.

Just a Quickie

The in laws are in town and we've been super busy around here but I just wanted to check in real quick.

MIL is determined to weed and prune my entire yard (I live on 2 acres!) and that's just fine with me.
Tomorrow we'll be cooking lots of good stuff to stock my freezer. We work well together in the kitchen. I know I'm lucky as that is not the norm when the words 'in-law' are used!

My girls are over the moon to have their grandparents in the house. They're all over them from before sunrise, until bed. It's pure joy for all parties involved.

Hubby and I are on day 5 of "Insanity". It's freaking NUTS! The warm up could make the average person puke. We're determined to get through the whole thing no matter how long it takes. We had to take today as a rest day because his back was a mess this morning. Um, probably due to the insane work out we did yesterday!

Last year I bought some size 10 shorts off the clearance rack at the end of the season. I knew they wouldn't fit at the time but had high hopes they would 'some day'. Today I put those suckers on and they fit! My FIL kept saying how nice I looked and how he couldn't believe how small I've gotten. I haven't lost much weight over the last 6 months but I've stepped up the exercise. I guess that stuff really works!

I need to go to bed now because day 6 of Insanity will be here before I know it. Have I mentioned how much I hate that damn program? And the hot trainer on the DVD? Yeah, I hate it but nobody ever said this lifestyle change was supposed to be easy, right?!

It's Ten Things Thursday, and what can I say? It's my favorite blog day because it allows me to get around to all the crap I didn't have time to write about during the week.
Here we go!

1. Hubby and I started the "Insanity" fitness program this week. Let me just tell you that it IS crazy! I'm a pretty fit person to begin with. I exercise intensely several times a week. None of that could have prepared me for this program. I was cursing the trainer during the warm up!
We've done 2 days and I'm so sore I want to go back to bed.

2. I'm stupid.
That's right, I have enough higher education degrees, licenses and certifications to wallpaper my bathroom, but I'm still stupid. Here I am almost 22 months out from this band surgery and some days I feel like I haven't learned a thing.
I KNOW I can't eat bread. Have known that all along. Yet, the genius in my head decided it would be a good idea to try one of my kids' crescent rolls last night at dinner. They're soft and gooey, and delicious. I thought maybe since my unfill, it just might work. That's a big N-O!
I won't even go into what the next several hours of my life were like. It wasn't pretty.

3. We have a registered sex offender about a mile away from our house. He committed his crime more than 20 years ago and has apparently been on the straight and narrow ever since. I don't know the details of his crime. However I do know what he looks like and where he lives. I secretly hate him from afar.
Imagine my surprise when we got to my preschooler's first soccer game last night and their shirts have this guys name on them! He's a local business owner and has financially sponsored the youth soccer league. I want to take a permanent marker to his name because I don't want any part of him on my child!

4. The in-laws are coming in 2 days. We haven't seen them since Christmas, which is very unusual. We're all buzzing with excitement around here! They won't believe how big the kids have gotten, and they'll be seeing our new house for the first time. Lots of fun stuff planned.

5. When I went in for my unfill last month, I saw another doctor in the practice, not my surgeon. He did the unfill and then I asked him if he had any idea why I was continuing to get tighter instead of looser over time. He said "I really don't know but my guess would be scar tissue building up around the band". I know he's not a bariatric doc so he may have absolutely no idea what he's talking about, but I was wondering if you've ever heard of that? I've emailed the nurse at my docs office to ask if she knew. Still waiting for a reply. Thoughts?

6. My weight is steadily heading back down to where I was before. Not sure what that was all about, but it scared the heck out of me to see such a high number on the scale, when I really hadn't done much different. Being more careful now!

7. I've been off peanut butter for a couple weeks now. I ran out of SF pudding, and that's the only time I usually have peanut butter, since it goes so well together. I bought pudding today so I'm pretty sure there's a chocolaty peanut butter snack in my near future. Oh, how I've missed it!

8. Have you heard about 'single ingredient ice cream'? We're in love with it. Just peel and slice a couple bananas. Freeze the bananas. When you're ready for an ice creamy treat, put the frozen bananas in a food processor and blend until it looks like ice cream! Seriously, it's as simple as that. We've experimented with flavors, adding vanilla extract or peanut butter. So you can feel like you're having ice cream, but you're getting a serving of fruit! I even added a little protein powder to mine and it was awesome.

9. Hubby just booked our vacation for next summer. My kids wanted a beach vacation...we had a family meeting a while ago and we all voted. Looks like we're going to Myrtle Beach! It will be my first time. Hubs was there during his college days. In laws will meet us there which is cool because they're a lot of fun on vacation. Can't wait!

10. My back is killing me right now from all the errands I had to run today, and all I can think about is that I have to try to get through Insanity tomorrow. Lord help me!

Sunday Stories

It's been 8 days since my last post. So let's try to catch up, shall we?

1. So many of you, my blogging friends, have been posting stories about spiders. I'm not really afraid of spiders, although I wouldn't say I'm a fan either.
Today I spent the better part of my afternoon in the 'lower level', or what most folks call the basement. That's where our family room and guest room are. I've been killing at least one spider each time I'm down there, so I went on a rampage with the vacuum cleaner.
I stopped counting when I had sucked up my 12th spider!

Now I'm thinking those little (and some big) suckers are in the vacuum bag re-building their nest and developing their evil plan for revenge! Sorry to my arachnophobe friends. I had to share.

2. Since I'm on the subject of the vacuum cleaner, my favorite household appliance, let me tell you about my Thursday.
This was the day I decided to clean the stairs. The previous owners had a cat, and 2 months later, I swear I'm still finding pet hair around the house.
So, I set the cleaner at the top step and used the hose to clean the stairs as I backed down one at a time. I got to the bottom and apparently that was one step too far because the cleaner fell off the top step and landed...wait for it......
on my head!
THAT hurt like a biotch, but being an OCD cleaner I kept doing what needed to be done.
Throughout the day I was having severe dizzy spells, to the point of almost blacking out.

THE WHOLE DAY, I thought the dizzy spells were about my low blood pressure. Until that night when I was telling my husband about the vacuum cleaner incident. DUH! Yeah, I think the severe blow to my head with a large household appliance just might explain some dizziness. Ya' think?

3. The other night after watching some mindless TV, an infomercial came on. It was for that crazy fitness program called "insanity". Have you heard of it? Seen the commercials? It's NUTS!
My husband, who tends to be very skeptical and researches everything to the point of exhaustion before even considering buying says "Do you want to buy that for our anniversary gift to each other".
HUH? Really?
Before we went to bed it was ordered. I think he got sucked in by the prospect of six pack abs.
It hasn't arrived yet but we know that the work outs are 40 minutes each. We have committed to being in the basement and ready to work by 5:20am. each day so that he can start getting ready for work at 6am.

4. I'm not liking this new thing in my life called Hunger. I'd spent the better part of nearly 2 years without hunger and now it's back. You may recall I had to have a major unfill about a month ago due to some severe heart burn and not being able to eat solid protein.
Well, everything has calmed down, no more heart burn, no more stuck episodes. But now I'm HUNGRY! It sucks. It reminds me daily of why I needed this band in the first place. It also reminds me why I was never able to lose the weight and keep it off before.
I'm struggling to maintain my weight loss.
I'd love to run right back for a fill to help me out, but my doc is 2 hours away so it's not that easy any more.
I'm going to try to suck it up and do this on my own, with a little help from Insanity!

5. I'm up a couple pounds this week and I don't want to talk about it. Please refer to #4 if you have questions.

That's about it for me tonight. I'm beat and need to get the kiddos ready for bed, with me soon to follow.
